How to sow a “Bee Nectar bar” – a home for wild bees

Here’s how you can help wild bees at home, whether in your garden or on your balcony.
Let the buzzing begin start your own “Bee Nectar bar.”
Sow the contents of the packet in your garden or on your balcony; the best times to do this are early autumn (September/October) or spring (March through May).

See the sowing instructions for gardens below.

Sowing wildflower seeds on your balcony is easy using pots or planters with good drainage.

Supplies and preparation:

  • Planters: Choose spacious pots or containers with drainage holes in the bottom.
  • Potting soil: Use fresh, airy, peat-free potting soil; a mixture of 50% potting soil and 50% sand works best.
  • Sowing date: Sow in spring (April–May) or early autumn (September).

Step-by-step sowing guide:

  • Fill the containers with the potting soil and press down lightly.
  • You can mix the seeds with a little sand to help spread them evenly.
  • Scatter the seeds over the soil.
  • Gently press the seeds down. Cover them with a very thin layer of soil (not too deep—often no thicker than the seed itself).
  • Carefully moisten the soil using a spray bottle or a watering can with a rose head attachment. Keep the soil moist during germination.
  • Keep the soil well-moistened for the first few weeks, especially during dry spells; this is highly recommended for spring sowing. If you sow in autumn, nature will take care of this for you.

And now the hardest part of all: patience!

Step-by-step guide to sowing wildflowers in your garden.

  • Choose the right spot: Find a location in full sun or light shade where water doesn’t pool or stay for too long.
  • Remove grass, paving stones, and weeds. Wildflowers struggle to grow in an existing lawn. Afterward, loosen the soil with a rake.
  • Mix the flower seeds with some soil and spread the mixture evenly over the ground.
  • Gently press the seeds down. Cover them with a very thin layer of soil (not too deep—often no thicker than the seed itself).
  • Carefully moisten the soil using a spray bottle or a watering can with a rose head attachment. Keep the soil moist during germination.
